Passports and Visas

All visitors entering the Czech Republic must have a valid passport; EU members can have a standard valid document for travelling through EU countries. Citizens of some countries will be required to have an entrance visa. Please consult the webpage of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic to inquire about visa issues.

Public transport

Public transport in Prague consists of buses, metro, trams, the Petřín funicular and ferries. Tickets with four different periods of validity are available:

  • 30 minutes - 24 CZK
  • 90 minutes - 32 CZK
  • 24 hours - 110 CZK
  • 72 hours - 310 CZK
All tickets are transfer tickets, it means that you are allowed to change between different kinds of transport. A ticket must be validated in one of the yellow validators (at the entrance to the metro, on the tram or bus) when you start your journey. You can buy tickets in ticket machines at metro stations, public transport information centres, most tobacconists, some supermarkets, at the airport or at railway stations etc.

The public transport is quite reliable and safe - safe to the extent as any Capital City may be, but certainly not safer. Beware of pickpockets! They are in action in the most frequented places as the Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí), the Main Railway Station (Hlavní nádraží) and on metro stations and metro trains in the city centre. Also, some tram lines have a bad reputation - No. 22 going through the centre. Always try not to be alone when using trams at night.

Coming by air

There are two terminals at the airport that deal with public international flights. All flights from Schengen countries arrive at Terminal 2 and all other flights arrive at Terminal 1.

The way from the airport to the conference venue:

  • either take an airport taxi (it should cost about 600 CZK), a yellow AAA Radiotaxi stand is located in the airport arriving hall,
  • or rent a car, the usual car rental companies (Avis, Hertz, Budget, Europcar, Sixt) and many other national ones are in the ground floor of the Terminal 1 building, and also in the Parking garage C,
  • or take bus 119 or Airport Express (AE) bus to the Dejvická metro station (be careful about the direction, with buses going to Letiště Ruzyně you might end up in the middle of nowhere), then
    • either take metro line A (green), 2 stops to Malostranská and then any of the tram lines 12, 20 or 22 to Malostranské náměstí (1 stop),
    • or take the tram line 20 and go directly to Malostranské Náměstí (5 stops),
note that usual public transport tickets cannot be used in the AE bus line, you can buy the ticket directly from the driver, the cost is 30 CZK to Dejvická (metro line A) or 50 CZK to Masarykovo nádraží railway station (connection with metro line B) and also to Hlavní nádraží (Main Railway Station) (connection with metro line C).

Coming by train

All international trains arrive at Praha hlavní nádraží (Prague Main Railway Station). Trains from direction Dresden also stop at Praha Holešovice railway station.

The way to the conference venue:

  • From the Main Railway Station: take the metro line C (red, direction Háje) to the Muzeum station (1 stop). Then change lines to A (green, direction Dejvická) and go 3 stops to Malostranská and then take any of the tram lines 12, 20, 22, to Malostranské náměstí (1 stop).
  • From the Holešovice railway station: take the metro line C (red, direction Háje) and go 4 stops to Muzeum. Then change lines to A (green, direction Dejvická) and go 3 stops to Malostranská and then take any of the tram lines 12, 20, 22, to Malostranské náměstí (1 stop). Alternatively, you may take the tram line 12 and go directly to Malostranské náměstí (7 stops).

Coming by bus

Most buses arrive at the Florenc bus terminal. To the conference venue from Florenc take the metro line C (red, direction Háje) and go 2 stops to Muzeum. Then change lines to A (green, direction Dejvická) and go 3 stops to Malostranská and then take any of the tram lines 12, 20, 22, to Malostranské náměstí (1 stop).

Coming by car

Note: There aren't almost any parking lots near the conference venue. The price is 50 CZK per hour.

From the west: (e. g. Germany, France, Switzerland,...)

Take the E50 westward (no. 6 highway from Nürnberg) and cross the border at the Rozvadov - Waidhaus border crossing. Then follow the D5 highway via Pilsen all the way to Prague.

To the venue: Follow the D5 all the way to the end, crossing the beltway. It will get you to a four-lane connection road northwards (direction Motol, Veleslavín, Střešovice, Hradčany). Cross the next intersection (on an overpass) and on the next one (large intersection with traffic lights) take a right turn (direction Centre, Veleslavín, Střešovice, Hradčany, Holešovice - about 4000m from the end of D5). The street is called "Bělohorská" (Rt. no.6). On the next large crossing the tram will cross your way to the right, but keep going straight ("Patočkova", still Rt. no.6). Soon, it will become "Milady Horákové" but the route's number (6) will stay. Then, after going through many red lights, just before entering a wide open space with two stadiums (if you are already there, it is too far) and just before the Israeli embassy turn right to "Badeniho" (about 5000m from joining Rt. no.6 - "Bělohorská"), which will soon change to "Chotkova" and make a double bend. Enjoy the view of Prague on the left. After the double bend take the first (small) street to the right (1100m from the last crossing). It will bring you to Malostranské náměstí (300 m).

From the north: (e. g. Berlin,...)

Once in Dresden, take the E55 southward, passing the Czech border at the Zinnwald - Cínovec border crossing. Then continue along the E55 via Teplice and join the D8 highway near Lovosice. It will take you all the way to Prague

To the venue: Follow the D8 all the way to the end, when it becomes "V Holešovičkách" (after crossing a highway-like intersection). Then continue on "V Holešovičkách", later crossing the river. Then, when you come to the river once more (3500m from the end of D8), take a right turn and follow the tram ("nábřeží Edvarda Beneše") along the river. Then, when you come to a tram station (2500m from the right turn to the river), turn right and almost immediately left again, to avoid going on the double bend the road makes. Then follow this one-way road to "Malostranské náměstí" (300 m).

From the northeast: (e. g. Wroclaw, Warsaw,...)

From Wroclaw take the E67 southward and follow it all the way via the Náchod and Hradec Králové to join the D11 highway near Chlumec nad Cidlinou. This will take you to Prague.

To the venue: The D11 ends on the beltway. Follow the beltway southward (direction Brno, Plzeň, Strakonice). Exit it towards Centrum, Nusle (after about 12000 m). Follow it until it splits into two one-way streets (about 5000m from the exit). Then, on the third red light turn left (Anglická, Žitná, also one-way). Then, at the fourth red light, turn left (again one-way) and on the next one right to cross the river after the next one. Then, on the fourth light after the bridge turn right ("Štefánikova") with the tram. Follow it, crossing many red lights (about 1500m) , to "Malostranské náměstí".

From the east: (e. g. Krakow, Slovakia, Hungary)

Use any suitable border crossing to get to Brno. Once there, take the D1 highway to Prague.

To the venue: When the D1 kind of splits at the "km 0.0" marker, choose the "Centrum, Nusle, Krč" direction. Cross the beltway and follow the street until it splits into two one-way streets (about 5000m from the exit). Then, on the third red light turn left (Anglická, Žitná, also one-way). Then, on the fourth red light, turn left (again one-way) and on the next one right to cross the river after the next one. Then, on the fourth light after the bridge turn right ("Štefánikova") with the tram. Follow it, crossing many red lights (about 1500m) , to "Malostranské náměstí".

From the southeast: (e. g. Vienna)

Use the Chvalovice border crossing on the E59, then follow it all the way to Jihlava and join the D1 there. It will take you to Prague.

To the venue: When the D1 kind of splits at the "km 0.0" marker, choose the Centrum, Nusle, Krč direction.

From the south: (e. g. Linz,...)

Once in Linz, take the E55 northward, crossing the border at Dolní Dvořiště. Then follow to České Budějovice, Tábor, Benešov to join the D1 highway close to Mirošovice. It will take you to Prague.

To the venue: When the D1 kind of splits at the "km 0.0" marker, choose the Centrum, Nusle, Krč direction.
